Outlining Imaging Applications of Test & Measurement Instruments

When talking about test & measurement instruments, there are many possible instruments we could be referring too. Generally, a test & measurement instrument is one that performs a specific test and outputs the measurement.

Imaging applications that require light or color uniformity to be measured benefit greatly from the combination of test & measurement devices like spectrometers, colorimeters, and light meters with camera systems. This blog post will outline some of the specific imaging applications where uniformity plays an important role.

Display Measurements

Televisions, smartphones, and tablets all use display technologies such as LED, OLED and LCD panels. When manufacturing these display technologies these panels have to be monitored for any variation in quality.

Typical quality indicators include flicker levels, uniformity of luminance and color, and using imaging test & measurement instruments these indicators can be tracked to ensure a high-quality product is produced.

Display Notebook

There are two main measurement principles used by test & measurement instruments for display applications. Spot measurements are used to measure a specific part, or parts, of the display, for color analysis, response time, and adjusting white point on that specific spot, assuming this is representative for the entire display. 2D measurements are used to analyze the entire display to ensure uniformity using a 2D camera image to highlight any variation, even up to the level of sub-pixels.

Lighting Measurements

Solid state lighting creates visible light with reduced energy dissipation and heat generation, making it a more energy efficient solution for lighting applications. Solid state lighting often used LEDs as a source of illumination.

luminaire production - sorting

A common issue when manufacturing solid state lighting and LED products are optical characteristic variations, such as color and brightness which relate to typical difficulties in production processes of LEDs. The entire luminaire or lighting design that also involves drivers and power converters may also result in other issues such as flicker. Test & measurement instruments used for lighting measurements are developed to measure one or more of these parameters at once.

Typical lighting measurements include; flicker measurements to determine and adjust flickering light sources; radiance or irradiance spectral power distribution measurements to discover the light source’s emitted power for each wavelength and to reveal color information, and (il)luminance and luminous intensity measurements to reveal the light output. For determining the uniformity of large luminous surfaces such as LED or OLED panels, imaging systems can determine additional information about the consistency and quality of a production process.
